AXIAN
360° Impact study

BACKGROUND

AXIAN is a pan-African group specialising in 5 business sectors: energy, telecoms, financial services, real estate and innovation. With more than 5,000 employees in the Indian Ocean and Africa, AXIAN is a partner in the economic transformation of emerging countries and has made positive impact one of the key commitments of its strategy for all Group companies.

MISSION

Since 2020, UTOPIES has been working with AXIAN every year to measure and monitor its impact on the Madagascan economy (jobs and GDP) and the climate (greenhouse gas emissions), in order to obtain a regular 360° view of its impacts. With this in mind, UTOPIES has co-constructed the main pillars of the Group’s climate strategy with the management of each division, in order to strengthen the division’s ‘Impacts’ dynamic. In 2023, UTOPIES supported AXIAN in the operational definition of the climate action plan, leading a 2-day climate seminar with over 30 CSR referents in Madagascar, and assisted certain clusters in defining emission reduction trajectories (SBTi). The impact studies (socio-economic and carbon) have also been extended to Uganda in 2023, after including Senegal, Tanzania and Togo in 2022.

The transfer of skills and tools, empowerment of employees and management of carbon data are key issues, so UTOPIES called on Traace, a company that offers AXIAN’s impact managers the opportunity to carry out their company’s carbon footprint directly via an interactive platform.

RESULTS

The socio-economic impact study highlighted the jobs supported and wealth generated (GDP) by AXIAN. With the ambition of becoming a benchmark in terms of positive impact and shared growth, AXIAN supported around 320,000 jobs in 2021, or 0.6% of the working population in Madagascar, Togo, Tanzania and Senegal. By supporting 200,000 jobs in Madagascar, the company is demonstrating its strong local roots. The Group has generated almost $1.3 million in wealth, and the impact of its activity in Madagascar represents 4.3% of Madagascar’s GDP. #LocalFootprint

The overall carbon footprint for the 3 scopes represents around 1.7MtCO2e, mainly due (70%) to the extraction of hydrocarbons and the fuel consumed by the customers of Jovena, one of the Group’s companies. The impact of purchases from suppliers and the consumption of fossil fuels in the Group’s facilities (thermal power stations, transmission towers) are also key issues on which AXIAN plans to focus its efforts over the next few years, and the proposed reduction trajectory will enable the Group to set a course until 2030. #CarbonReport #ClimateStrategy

Impacts reports presenting the approach and the results of the impact studies are available on the AXIAN website.
